At the very outset, the title suggests us to have a hard look, forcing us to think whether it demands a blog on it. Both the methods, on the face of it look mutually exclusive. YES, they are . But both the procedures enjoy a warm handshake too accepting disagreements between them.
To each its own is the perfect answer to  the indecision. Other things being equal , no single method of preparation ,despite having major differences , in isolation serves the purpose of helping a student to choose between the two.
We are dwelling in an universe of learning. An aspirant going on his own for the entire journey or getting assisted by professionals/coaching calls for a case study.
Make no mistake, the deciding factor for the option depends on a students self confidence, self assessment and self evaluation. A student having a staunch flair of tireless learning with an academic lust coupled up with positivity can crack any competitive/entrance exam on his own with the help of a solid plan and perspective and getting to the skin of the things. In self-study, its all about students hard work, persistence of purpose and creativity so that he can be at the top of the game.
The pointers going in favour of self-study are few though not unimportant. A comfortable and a cozy place to study, cost-effectiveness, saves time and energy and reducing level of pressure and stress .
Pointers in favour of coaching are many and do make difference. Professional coaching helps in preparation with a direction with a well crafted curriculum prepared by experienced faculty. A time-bounded course structure with regular tests and quizzes is another added advantage. Again, coaching provides a sound competitive environment to the student to identify his strengths and weaknesses, coming out of his comfort zone and pushing his envelope and achieving more than anticipation.
An easy access to teachers/faculty to clear doubts from time to time is a big advantage for the student. Its important to have timely resolution of doubts to gain insights into ones progress. Coaching institutes have a proper system where one can get both academic and non- academic doubts answered.
The factors going against coaching are false sense of security. It is unaffordable for lower strata of society giving financial constraints. Keeping pace with the institute becomes very difficult for the students.
The pressure of commuting and the last minute cancellation of classes takes a toll on the student with frustration. Lack of personal attention in the event of big sized batches is also a dent .
In a nutshell, a student can have the best of both worlds.  With his self-confidence and determination he can pull off many rabbits and crack any exam with flying colors. A coaching centre if used smartly can reward him in multiple ways.
