CAT Score vs Percentile 2026: How Your Marks Convert to Percentile & IIM Cutoffs
Updated: 8 hours ago

CAT score and CAT percentile are two completely different things — and confusing them is one of the most common errors aspirants make when setting preparation targets. A student who scored 140 out of 198 in CAT 2023 was at 98 percentile. A student who scored 165 in CAT 2019 was also at 98 percentile. Same percentile, very different raw scores.
At Headache Tutorials in Indore, we coach CAT aspirants — especially commerce and non-engineering students. This guide gives you the actual score-to-percentile mapping for CAT 2026, section-wise breakdown, and IIM cutoffs you need to target.

CAT 2026 Exam Pattern — Quick Reference
Total questions: 66 | Total marks: 198 | Duration: 120 minutes
VARC: 24 questions (RC: 16 + Verbal: 8) — 40 minutes
DILR: 20 questions (4–5 sets) — 40 minutes
QA: 22 questions — 40 minutes
MCQ: -1/3 for wrong answer | TITA (non-MCQ): No negative marking
Conducted in 3 slots — November 2026. Scores normalised across slots.
CAT 2026 Overall Score vs Percentile — Expected Mapping
Based on CAT 2022–2025 data, here is the approximate normalised score-to-percentile relationship. Important: CAT normalises across 3 slots, so raw scores vary. These ranges reflect normalised equivalents.
175+ → 99.5+ percentile (top 0.5% of ~3.5 lakh test-takers)
160–175 → 99–99.5 percentile
145–160 → 98–99 percentile
130–145 → 95–98 percentile
115–130 → 90–95 percentile
95–115 → 82–90 percentile
75–95 → 70–82 percentile
Below 75 → Below 70 percentile
Key insight from our coaching: Always set your target 15 marks above the minimum you need. Paper difficulty shifts the entire curve. In CAT 2023 (very difficult QA), the 99 percentile threshold was 143 — 20 marks lower than 2022. Plan for variance.
Section-Wise Score vs Percentile — CAT 2026
IIMs use section-wise cutoffs for shortlisting — a high overall percentile with one weak section gets you rejected. Here is what the data shows across recent CAT papers:
VARC — Score vs Percentile
65+ out of 72 → 99+ percentile
55–65 → 97–99 percentile
45–55 → 90–97 percentile
35–45 → 78–90 percentile
Below 35 → Below 78 percentile
DILR — Score vs Percentile
55+ out of 60 → 99+ percentile
45–55 → 95–99 percentile
35–45 → 88–95 percentile
25–35 → 75–88 percentile
Below 25 → Below 75 percentile
QA — Score vs Percentile
62+ out of 66 → 99+ percentile
52–62 → 96–99 percentile
42–52 → 90–96 percentile
32–42 → 80–90 percentile
Below 32 → Below 80 percentile

Why Commerce Students Can Achieve 95+ Percentile in CAT
The biggest fear among BBA and B.Com students: 'I cannot crack CAT without a strong Maths background.' This is a myth we have seen broken by our own students repeatedly.
CAT QA at 95 percentile level is dominated by Arithmetic — Percentages, Profit & Loss, TSD, Time & Work, and Ratio. These are Class 10 concepts. Commerce students who master Arithmetic can score 35–40 out of 66 in QA. Combined with strong VARC (where arts and commerce students naturally have an edge), 95 overall percentile is very achievable.
Commerce students' natural advantage: VARC (Reading Comprehension, Para Jumbles)
Build QA from Arithmetic first — skip advanced topics until Arithmetic is perfect
DILR is learnable — 2–3 set types practiced consistently across 3 months yields 85–90 percentile in DILR
Our CAT students from B.Com and BBA backgrounds have crossed 95–99 percentile with this approach
FAQs: CAT Score vs Percentile 2026
What score is needed for 99 percentile in CAT 2026?
Based on historical CAT data, a normalised score of 155–165 out of 198 typically corresponds to 99 percentile. This varies by paper difficulty — in a tough year like CAT 2023, 145 was enough for 99 percentile, while in easier years 170+ may be needed.
What CAT percentile is needed for IIM Ahmedabad?
IIM Ahmedabad's shortlisting cutoff is typically 99+ percentile overall with section-wise cutoffs of 85+ percentile in each section (VARC, DILR, QA) for the General category. Both overall and section-wise thresholds must be cleared simultaneously.
Is 95 percentile in CAT good enough for IIM?
95 percentile gets you into IIM Kozhikode, Shillong, Trichy, Udaipur, and several new IIMs. For IIM Calcutta, Lucknow, and Indore you generally need 97–98 percentile. For IIM ABC (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta), 99+ is required.
Does CAT have normalization across slots?
Yes. CAT is conducted in 3 slots and uses statistical normalization to equalise scores across slots of varying difficulty. Your percentile is calculated on the normalised score. Two students with different raw scores in different slots can end up with the same percentile.
Can a commerce student score 95 percentile in CAT?
Absolutely. CAT QA at 95 percentile level is 70–80% Arithmetic — Percentages, Profit & Loss, TSD, Time & Work. These are Class 10 topics. Commerce students from Headache Tutorials who mastered Arithmetic and VARC have cleared 95–99 percentile consistently.
