Before you invest a single hour in IPMAT 2028 preparation, confirm that you are eligible. This guide gives you the complete eligibility breakdown for both IPMAT Indore and IPMAT Rohtak 2028, including age limits, academic requirements, category relaxations, gap year rules, and every common doubt answered.

IPMAT 2028 Eligibility — Side-by-Side Comparison

Qualification: Class 12 passed or appearing (both IIMs). Minimum marks for General/OBC/EWS: 60% in Class 12 for IIM Indore; 60% in BOTH Class 10 AND Class 12 for IIM Rohtak. Minimum marks for SC/ST/PwD: 55% for both. Age limit for General: Born on or after August 1, 2008 for Indore; Maximum 20 years as of June 30, 2028 for Rohtak. Age for SC/ST/PwD: Born on or after August 1, 2003 for Indore; Maximum 25 years as of June 30, 2028 for Rohtak. Stream: Any for both. Attempts: Unlimited for both.

IIM Indore IPMAT 2028 — Detailed Eligibility

Academic Qualification: You must have passed or be appearing in Class 12 from a recognized board — CBSE, ICSE, State Boards, or NIOS. The minimum aggregate is 60% for General, OBC-NC, and EWS candidates. SC, ST, and PwD candidates need 55%. IIM Indore does NOT require a minimum in Class 10 — only Class 12 marks matter for Indore.

Age Limit: General, OBC-NC, and EWS candidates must be born on or after August 1, 2008. SC, ST, and PwD candidates get a 5-year relaxation — they must be born on or after August 1, 2003. If you are currently in Class 11 in April 2026, you would have been born around 2008-2009, making you fully eligible for IPMAT 2028.

IIM Rohtak IPMAT 2028 — Detailed Eligibility

Academic Qualification: IIM Rohtak requires a minimum of 60% in BOTH Class 10 and Class 12 for General, EWS, and OBC-NC candidates. This is the most critical difference from IIM Indore. Even if your Class 12 aggregate is 65%, a Class 10 score of 58% makes you ineligible for Rohtak. SC, ST, and PwD candidates need a minimum of 55% in both Class 10 and Class 12.

Age Limit: General and OBC-NC candidates must be a maximum of 20 years of age as of June 30, 2028. SC, ST, and PwD candidates get a 5-year relaxation, making the maximum 25 years as of June 30, 2028. This means candidates born on or after July 1, 2008 are eligible under General category.

Stream and Nationality

Both IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak accept students from ALL streams — Science (PCM or PCB), Commerce, and Arts/Humanities. There is no stream restriction whatsoever. IPMAT is open to Indian nationals. Arts students with strong English skills often outperform Science students in the Verbal Ability section, which is the largest section in both exams.

How to Calculate Your Aggregate Percentage

IPMAT eligibility is based on aggregate marks across ALL subjects in Class 12 — not just the best of five or core subjects. For example: 72 (English) + 68 (Maths) + 75 (Physics) + 60 (Chemistry) + 65 (Physical Education) = 340 out of 500 = 68%. This meets the 60% threshold. If your board calculates aggregate differently, use the board's official calculation method from your marksheet.

Gap Year Students

Gap year students are fully eligible for IPMAT as long as they meet the age limit and minimum marks criteria. There is no freshness requirement. A student who passed Class 12 in 2026 and takes a year off to prepare for IPMAT 2028 is fully eligible, provided they are within the age limit. A gap year used for focused IPMAT preparation can be extremely productive.

Class 12 Appearing Students — Provisional Eligibility

Students currently in Class 12 appearing in 2028 board exams can apply provisionally. You do not need your final marksheet to register. However, if selected, your final Class 12 marksheet must show the required minimum percentage before joining the programme. If boards result falls below 60%, the admission offer is cancelled even after clearing IPMAT and the PI.

Documents Required for IPMAT 2028

Passport-size photograph: white background, 20-200 KB, JPG format. Scanned signature: white paper background, 10-100 KB, JPG. Class 10 marksheet and passing certificate. Class 12 marksheet or admit card if results are pending. Category certificate (OBC-NC, SC, ST, EWS, or PwD as applicable). Valid photo ID: Aadhaar, passport, or school ID. PwD candidates need a disability certificate issued by a competent medical authority.

Frequently Asked Questions — IPMAT 2028 Eligibility

Can Arts stream students apply for IPMAT 2028?

Yes, absolutely. IPMAT has no stream restriction. Students from Arts, Commerce, and Science are equally eligible. Arts students with strong English often outperform others in the Verbal Ability section (45 questions in Indore, 40 in Rohtak). Many successful IPMAT candidates come from Humanities background.

My Class 10 score is 58% but Class 12 is 70% — am I eligible for IIM Rohtak?

No. IIM Rohtak requires 60% in BOTH Class 10 and Class 12. A Class 10 score of 58% makes you ineligible for Rohtak under General category. You remain eligible for IIM Indore, which only checks Class 12 marks. This is the most common eligibility mistake students make.

What if I scored 58% in Class 12 under General category?

You are ineligible for both IPMAT Indore and Rohtak under General category, which requires 60%. If you belong to SC, ST, or PwD category, you are eligible with 55%. There is no provision for General or OBC-NC candidates below 60%.

Is NIOS valid for IPMAT eligibility?

Yes. NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) is a recognized board and NIOS Class 12 certificates are accepted. Your marks must meet the minimum aggregate threshold. International board certificates (IB, Cambridge A-levels) are also generally accepted — confirm with the official notification.

How many times can I attempt IPMAT?

There is no attempt limit. You can appear every year. The age limit practically restricts most General category candidates to 2-3 attempts — Class 12 appearing year, Class 12 passed year, and one additional year if still within age limit.

Can I apply for IPMAT if I have a gap year?

Yes. Gap year students are fully eligible. There is no freshness requirement for IPMAT. A student who passed Class 12 in 2026 can apply for IPMAT 2028 as long as they meet the age limit and minimum marks criteria.

Is there a domicile restriction for IPMAT?

No. IPMAT is open to students from any state in India. Students from all states, union territories, and all recognized educational boards can apply.

What if I am in Class 11 in April 2026 — should I start preparing?

Yes — start immediately. If you are in Class 11 in April 2026, you have approximately 24 months before IPMAT 2028. This is the ideal preparation window. Tanisq Chouhan, our student who scored AIR 1 in JIPMAT, began in Class 11 with a structured 2-year plan. Students who start in Class 11 consistently outperform those who begin in Class 12.

Can a student who passed Class 12 in 2026 apply for IPMAT 2028?

Yes, provided they are within the age limit. For IIM Indore (General), born on or after August 1, 2008. For IIM Rohtak (General), maximum 20 years old as of June 30, 2028. A 2026 Class 12 pass-out who uses 2026-28 for focused IPMAT preparation has a major preparation advantage.

What happens if I clear IPMAT but score below 60% in Class 12 boards?

Your admission offer will be cancelled. Meeting 60% in Class 12 is mandatory for joining the programme. Clearing IPMAT is necessary but not sufficient — board preparation cannot be neglected under any circumstances.

Is EWS reservation available in IPMAT?

Yes. EWS reservation is available per government guidelines. EWS candidates require the same 60% minimum marks as General category. You need a valid EWS certificate from the competent authority. Check the official notification for seat distribution under EWS.
