Why Arithmetic is the Most Important IPMAT Topic
Arithmetic contributes 35 to 40% of all Quantitative Ability questions in IPMAT Indore and Rohtak — roughly 10 to 12 out of every 30 QA questions. No other single area gives you more marks per hour of preparation. Students who master Arithmetic first consistently outperform those who start with Algebra or Geometry.
Tanisq Chouhan, our student who scored AIR 1 in JIPMAT, spent his entire first month exclusively on Arithmetic before touching any other QA topic. “Arithmetic is the foundation of the entire QA section. If your Arithmetic is strong, Algebra and Number System become much easier because most problems connect back to percentage or ratio concepts.”
IPMAT Arithmetic — Topic-wise Weightage
Percentages — The Root of All Arithmetic
Percentages underpin Profit & Loss, Simple Interest, Data Interpretation, and Mixtures. Master this topic first and every other Arithmetic topic becomes easier. Key concepts: Percentage change = (New – Old) / Old × 100. Successive changes of A% then B% give net change = A + B + AB/100. Memorise key fractions: 1/8 = 12.5%, 1/6 = 16.67%, 3/8 = 37.5%. These eliminate calculator dependency on exam day.
Profit, Loss & Discount
Profit and Loss is applied percentage. Profit% = (Profit / Cost Price) × 100. Key IPMAT formulas: Successive discounts (a% + b%) = a + b − ab/100. If two items sold at same SP, one at X% profit and one at X% loss — net result is always a loss of X²/100%. Memorise this result as it appears directly in IPMAT papers.
Time, Speed & Distance
TSD appears in 2 to 3 questions in almost every IPMAT paper. Distance = Speed × Time. Average speed when same distance at speeds A and B = 2AB/(A+B), not (A+B)/2. Relative speed: moving toward each other — add speeds; same direction — subtract. Unit conversion: 1 km/hr = 5/18 m/s.
Time & Work
Use the LCM method. Assign total work as the LCM of the days each person takes. Example: A finishes in 12 days, B in 18 days. LCM = 36 units. A does 3 units/day, B does 2 units/day. Together = 5 units/day. Total time = 36/5 = 7.2 days. Apply the same logic to Pipes and Cisterns.
Ratio, Proportion & Mixtures
The Alligation method solves mixture problems in 20 seconds. When two ingredients with values A and B are mixed to get mean value M, the ratio of quantities = (B − M) : (M − A). Use it for any mixing, solution, or weighted average problem.
Averages, SI & CI
Simple Interest: SI = PRT/100. Compound Interest: CI = P(1 + R/100)^T − P. Key shortcut: For 2 years, CI − SI = P(R/100)². This is a direct IPMAT question type. Memorise it and solve a 2-mark question in under 30 seconds.
Tanisq Chouhan's Arithmetic Approach — AIR 1 JIPMAT
Tanisq dedicated Month 1 entirely to Arithmetic. His daily routine: 25 Arithmetic problems every morning, no formulas until he understood concepts from first principles, and a mandatory error log categorising every wrong answer. “I never moved to the next topic until I could solve 90% of questions from the current topic without referring to formulas. Arithmetic is where the easy marks live, and easy marks at speed separates toppers from average scorers.”

Frequently Asked Questions — IPMAT Arithmetic
How many Arithmetic questions appear in IPMAT?
Roughly 10 to 12 in IIM Indore and 12 to 15 in IIM Rohtak. Arithmetic is the single largest contributor to QA marks.
Which Arithmetic topic is most important for IPMAT?
Percentages, Profit & Loss, and TSD account for 60 to 70% of all Arithmetic questions. Prepare these three first.
Is NCERT enough for IPMAT Arithmetic?
NCERT builds the foundation but is not enough. Follow with RS Aggarwal for volume and Arun Sharma for higher difficulty.
What is the Alligation method?
A shortcut for mixture problems. When values A and B are mixed to get mean M, ratio = (B−M):(M−A). Solves in 20 seconds what algebra takes 2 minutes.
What is the CI minus SI formula?
For 2 years, CI − SI = P(R/100)². Memorise this to solve a direct IPMAT question in under 30 seconds.
Should I use shortcuts or concepts for IPMAT QA?
Concepts first, shortcuts after. Build the concept so you can derive the formula. Shortcuts without concepts fail on unfamiliar question types.
Is Arithmetic asked in IPMAT SA section?
Yes. IIM Indore's 15 Short Answer questions include Arithmetic. SA has no negative marking so attempt every Arithmetic SA question.
What is the average speed formula?
When same distance is covered at speeds A and B, average speed = 2AB/(A+B). The common mistake of using (A+B)/2 costs marks in every exam.
Can a commerce student score well in IPMAT Arithmetic?
Yes. Commerce students have an advantage in Profit & Loss, SI, CI, and Ratio. With 4 weeks focused on TSD and Work, a commerce student can match science students in Arithmetic.
How do I avoid silly mistakes in Arithmetic?
Maintain an error log categorising every wrong answer as conceptual, careless, or time-related. Most silly mistakes disappear after 3 to 4 weeks of logging.
How long should I spend on Arithmetic preparation?
Dedicate the first 3 to 4 weeks exclusively to Arithmetic. Then revise weekly throughout your preparation. Never let Arithmetic accuracy drop below 85%.
How difficult is IPMAT Arithmetic compared to Class 10 maths?
IPMAT Arithmetic is Class 10 concepts applied under time pressure with clever twists. The concepts are familiar but the questions test speed and application, not just formula recall.
