IPMAT Personal Interview 2026: Topics, Questions & Preparation Tips

Cracking the IPMAT written exam is only half the battle. The Personal Interview (PI) is the final and decisive round — and many students who score well in the written test lose their seat here because they are simply not prepared for it. This guide covers everything you need to know about the IPMAT Personal Interview 2026: what it tests, what topics come up, actual questions asked in previous years, and how to prepare effectively.

What is the IPMAT Personal Interview?

The IPMAT Personal Interview (PI) is the second and final stage of the IIM Indore IPM selection process. Students who clear the IPMAT written exam with the required sectional and overall cutoffs are shortlisted for the PI round.

The PI is conducted by a panel of IIM Indore faculty, typically 2–3 professors. It lasts between 15 and 30 minutes. Unlike MBA PI rounds, the IPMAT PI does not include a Group Discussion (GD) or Written Ability Test (WAT) — it is purely a one-on-one interview.

  • Format: Personal Interview only (no GD, no WAT)

  • Duration: 15–30 minutes

  • Panel: 2–3 IIM Indore faculty members

  • Mode: In-person at IIM Indore campus (Indore)

  • When: June–July 2026 (after IPMAT result in June)

How Much Does the PI Matter? Weightage in Final Selection

The final selection at IIM Indore IPM is based on a Composite Score (CS). The weightage breakdown is:

  • ATS (Aptitude Test Score from written exam): 65%

  • Personal Interview (PI) Score: 35%

This means the PI carries 35% weightage in your final Composite Score. The ATS (your normalised written exam score) carries the remaining 65%. A student who scores just above the cutoff in the written exam but performs brilliantly in PI can significantly improve their final ranking. The PI is not a formality — it is a genuine game-changer.

Note: ATS stands for Aptitude Test Score. It is not your raw exam score — it is a normalised score calculated from your sectional raw scores compared against the highest and lowest scores in the candidate pool. The PI score is added to the ATS to produce the final Composite Score (CS).

What Does IIM Indore Evaluate in the IPMAT PI?

The IIM Indore panel evaluates you on several dimensions during the PI:

  • Clarity of thought — Can you express ideas logically and concisely?

  • Academic awareness — Do you know your Class 11–12 subjects well?

  • Current affairs and general knowledge — Are you aware of what’s happening in India and the world?

IPMAT PI Preparation Strategy — Step by Step

You have roughly 3–4 weeks between the IPMAT result and the PI date. Here is how to use that time:

Step 1 — Build your PI Dossier (Days 1–3)

Write down 5–10 key facts about yourself: your academic background, achievements, hobbies, a challenge you overcame, a book you read, a news story that influenced you. This becomes the source material for most PI answers. Practice delivering each story in under 90 seconds.

Step 2 — Revise Class 11–12 Fundamentals (Days 4–7)

If you are from Commerce: revise Economics (demand, supply, GDP, inflation, RBI, fiscal policy) and Accounts (basic journal entries, balance sheet, P&L). If you are from Science: revise key Physics and Chemistry concepts, plus basic Economics. IIM faculty often test your stream subjects to check academic foundation.

Step 3 — Current Affairs Preparation (Days 8–15)

Read one newspaper daily — The Hindu or Economic Times. Focus on: Indian economy, government schemes, business news, technology trends, sports achievements. Keep a handwritten note of 5 key facts daily. At the end of 7 days, you will have 35 solid current affairs points to discuss.

Step 4 — Mock Interviews (Days 16–21)

Practice at least 3–5 full mock interviews before your actual PI. Ask a teacher, parent, or mentor to interview you for 20 minutes. Record yourself on video and watch it back — identify filler words, poor posture, and unclear answers. The goal is not to memorise answers but to become comfortable thinking and speaking simultaneously under pressure.

Key Topics to Prepare for IPMAT PI — Topic-wise Checklist

Indian Economy (must know):

  • GDP, GNP, GNI — definitions and current figures

  • Inflation, CPI, WPI — how they are measured and controlled

  • RBI — role, repo rate, reverse repo, CRR, SLR

  • Union Budget 2025–26 — key announcements and implications

  • GST — what it is, how it works, impact on businesses

Business and Management Concepts:

  • What is marketing? What are the 4Ps?

  • What is supply chain management?

  • Difference between revenue, profit, and cash flow

  • What is disruption? Give an example of a disruptive company in India

IIM Indore Specific (always comes up):

  • When was IIM Indore established? Who is the current Director?

  • What programs does IIM Indore offer besides IPM?

  • What is IIM Indore’s ranking in India and globally?

  • Name 2–3 notable alumni of IIM Indore

Common Mistakes Students Make in IPMAT PI

  • Giving a rehearsed, robotic self-introduction — the panel can tell immediately. Be natural and conversational.

  • Saying “I don’t know” and stopping — always attempt an answer, then say “I’m not fully certain but I believe...”

  • Not knowing your own Class 12 subjects well — faculty often ask about your stream directly

  • Vague answers to “Why management?” — have a specific, genuine, personal reason

  • Dressing casually — wear formal clothes, be punctual, carry all documents

  • Being dishonest about achievements — the panel will probe deeper and catch inconsistencies

IPMAT PI Documents Required

  • IPMAT admit card (original + photocopy)

  • Class 10 marksheet and certificate

  • Class 12 marksheet (or appearing certificate)

  • Photo ID proof (Aadhaar/Passport/Voter ID)

  • Caste/category certificate if applicable (SC/ST/OBC/PwD)

  • 4 recent passport-size photographs
