Why Paper Trend Analysis Matters More Than the Paper Itself
Students who download old papers and solve them randomly improve their score by 5 to 10 marks. Students who understand the trend — which topics repeat, which are declining, what the examiner favours — improve by 30 to 50 marks. The paper is data. The analysis is strategy.
IPMAT Indore QA — Topic-Wise Trend Analysis (2022 to 2026)
The QA section has 30 MCQ questions and 15 Short Answer (SA) questions. Both sections draw from the same topic pool. Here is how each major topic has appeared across the last 5 years:
Coordinate Geometry
Appeared in: 2022 (2Q), 2023 (3Q), 2024 (3Q), 2025 (2Q), 2026 (3Q)
Verdict: Permanent fixture. 2 to 3 questions every single year without exception. This is the one topic where missing a question is not acceptable if you have prepared. Focus areas: distance between points, section formula, slope, equation of a line, and basic locus.
Logarithms and Progressions
Appeared in: 2022 (2Q), 2023 (3Q), 2024 (2Q), 2025 (3Q), 2026 (2Q)
Verdict: Consistently 2 to 3 questions. Examiners love combining logs with AP/GP — questions like 'sum of a GP in log form' appear regularly. Practice this combination specifically.
Permutations, Combinations and Probability
Appeared in: 2022 (3Q), 2023 (2Q), 2024 (4Q), 2025 (3Q), 2026 (3Q)
Verdict: 2 to 4 questions. One of the most feared topics — but in IPMAT, the questions are medium difficulty. Arrangements with restrictions and probability using combinations appear most frequently.
Set Theory
Appeared in: 2022 (1Q), 2023 (2Q), 2024 (3Q), 2025 (2Q), 2026 (3Q)
Verdict: Growing in frequency — from 1 question in 2022 to 3 in 2024 and 2026. Venn diagrams with 2 and 3 sets are the standard question type. Easy to get full marks once the concept is clear.
Arithmetic — Core 5 Topics
(Percentages, Profit and Loss, Time-Speed-Distance, Work and Pipes, Ratio and Proportion)
Appeared in: 4 to 6 questions every year combined across MCQ and SA sections
Verdict: The backbone of both MCQ and SA sections. These topics appear every year without exception. The SA section in particular has 4 to 5 arithmetic questions annually. Master these before touching any other topic.
Functions and Algebra
Appeared in: 2022 (2Q), 2023 (2Q), 2024 (2Q), 2025 (1Q), 2026 (2Q)
Verdict: Stable at 1 to 2 questions. Domain and range, composite functions, and modulus functions are the recurring question types.
Number System
Appeared in: 2022 (2Q), 2023 (1Q), 2024 (2Q), 2025 (2Q), 2026 (1Q)
Verdict: 1 to 2 questions consistently. Remainders, divisibility rules, and unit digit problems are the most tested sub-topics.
Data Arrangement
Appeared in: 2022 (4Q), 2023 (5Q), 2024 (5Q), 2025 (4Q), 2026 (5Q)
Verdict: Highest frequency topic in QA MCQ — 4 to 5 questions every year. These are set-based questions requiring arrangement of data in tables or sequences. Surprisingly, many students skip this topic. Do not. One set well done = 4 to 5 correct answers.
Geometry and Mensuration
Appeared in: 2022 (2Q), 2023 (1Q), 2024 (2Q), 2025 (2Q), 2026 (1Q)
Verdict: 1 to 2 questions. Focus on triangles (similarity, congruence, area), circles (chord, tangent, arc), and basic mensuration (cylinder, cone, sphere). Questions are not very difficult but require clear concept.
Matrices and Determinants
Appeared in: 2022 (1Q), 2023 (1Q), 2024 (1Q), 2025 (1Q), 2026 (1Q)
Verdict: Exactly 1 question every year — reliable but not worth spending weeks on. Learn just the basics: 2x2 determinant, matrix addition and multiplication. One hour of preparation, one guaranteed mark.
IPMAT Indore VA — Topic-Wise Trend Analysis (2022 to 2026)
The VA section has 45 questions for 180 marks. Here is how each topic has appeared:
Reading Comprehension
Appeared in: 2022 (10Q), 2023 (12Q), 2024 (12Q), 2025 (12Q), 2026 (12Q)
Verdict: Stabilised at 12 questions across 3 to 4 passages since 2023. Passages are 300 to 500 words, on topics like economics, science, society, and literature. Questions are inference-based — the answer is never directly in the passage. This is why daily reading matters far more than vocabulary lists.
Para Jumbles
Appeared in: 2022 (4Q), 2023 (5Q), 2024 (5Q), 2025 (5Q), 2026 (5Q)
Verdict: Consistent at 5 questions since 2023. IPMAT para jumbles have 4 to 5 sentences. The trick is identifying the mandatory first and last sentence — once those are fixed, the middle falls into place.
Phrasal Verbs
Appeared in: 2022 (3Q), 2023 (5Q), 2024 (5Q), 2025 (5Q), 2026 (5Q)
Verdict: 5 questions since 2023. This is one topic most students ignore — and then regret. Common phrasal verbs (break down, call off, give in, look up to) appear frequently. 200 to 300 phrasal verbs is a manageable preparation task.
Grammar — Error Spotting and Subject-Verb Agreement
Appeared in: 2022 (4Q), 2023 (5Q), 2024 (5Q), 2025 (5Q), 2026 (5Q)
Verdict: 5 questions. Tenses, subject-verb agreement, and misplaced modifiers are the recurring error types. These are learnable rules — each rule you learn correctly is a guaranteed mark.
Para Completion and Para Summary
Appeared in: 2022 (4Q), 2023 (5Q), 2024 (5Q), 2025 (5Q), 2026 (5Q)
Verdict: 5 questions. Para summary is easier than para jumbles — a 3 to 4 line paragraph, and you choose the best one-line summary. The trap is options that are too narrow (cover only one idea) or too broad (go beyond what the para says).
Confusing Words and Fillers
Appeared in: 2022 (5Q), 2023 (5Q), 2024 (5Q), 2025 (5Q), 2026 (5Q)
Verdict: 5 questions — perfectly consistent. Commonly confused word pairs (affect vs effect, complement vs compliment, principal vs principle) appear regularly. This is the most predictable topic in the entire IPMAT.
Difficulty Trend: How Has IPMAT Changed Year Over Year?
QA Difficulty Trend
2022: Moderate — arithmetic heavy, manageable for a well-prepared student
2023: Moderate-Hard — data arrangement sets increased, coordinate geometry got harder
2024: Hard — P&C questions were calculation-heavy, set theory increased to 3 questions
2025: Moderate — slight easing after 2024's difficult paper, arithmetic returned to dominance
2026: Hard — data arrangement and coordinate geometry both at 3 to 5 questions, less arithmetic
VA Difficulty Trend
2022: Moderate — RC passages were shorter and more direct
2023: Hard — RC became inference-heavy, passages on abstract topics introduced
2024: Hard — 12 RC questions with complex academic passages
2025: Moderate-Hard — RC maintained but para jumbles got longer (5 sentences)
2026: Hard — all five topic areas at full 5 questions each, no easy topic to exploit
What Does This Mean for IPMAT 2027?
Based on 5-year trend analysis, here is what IPMAT 2027 is likely to look like:
QA MCQ: Data Arrangement will stay at 4 to 5 questions — this is now a permanent fixture
QA MCQ: Coordinate Geometry will stay at 2 to 3 questions — prepare it fully
QA MCQ: Expect P&C or Set Theory at 3+ questions — difficulty continuing to rise
QA SA: Arithmetic core will dominate — 4 to 5 out of 15 SA questions will be from the arithmetic core 5
VA: RC will stay at 12 questions — inference-based, not factual
VA: All 5 of the 5-question topic groups (Para Jumbles, Phrasal Verbs, Grammar, Para Summary, Confusing Words) will continue — each at 5 questions
Overall: QA difficulty likely to stay hard; VA difficulty likely to remain hard-moderate
The Coach's Takeaway — What to Do With This Data
After coaching 2000+ students since 2008, including IPMAT selections at IIM Rohtak (Dhairya Jain, Saurabh), here is the exact preparation priority this trend analysis points to:
Prepare Data Arrangement separately — it is worth 16 to 20 marks and most students do not prepare it at all
Coordinate Geometry is non-negotiable — 8 to 12 marks across 5 years, medium difficulty
Do not waste time on Matrices beyond the basics — 1 question every year, not worth deep preparation
VA preparation should begin with RC (daily reading) and Confusing Words (most predictable topic)
The SA section has no negative marking — attempt all 15 questions. Even a guess on an arithmetic question is worth attempting
Frequently Asked Questions — IPMAT Previous Year Papers
Where can I get IPMAT previous year papers?
IIM Indore does not officially release previous year papers. Free mock tests from IMS, TIME, and Career Launcher are the closest substitute. You can also find student-shared question reconstructions on forums. Join our WhatsApp group for curated free practice material.
How many previous year papers should I solve for IPMAT?
Solving 5 to 7 full-length mocks matters more than solving old papers. IPMAT changes its question types and difficulty each year — old papers give you a feel for the format, not a reliable prediction of next year. Mocks trained on current difficulty levels are more useful.
Has IPMAT Indore become harder in recent years?
Yes. Based on 5-year analysis, both QA and VA have become progressively harder from 2022 to 2026, with brief moderation in 2025. Data Arrangement in QA and RC in VA have both increased in difficulty and weightage. Preparation depth matters more than it did 3 to 4 years ago.
Which year's IPMAT paper was the hardest?
2024 and 2026 were the most challenging papers in recent years. 2024 had heavy P&C questions and complex set theory. 2026 had very heavy data arrangement and harder coordinate geometry. 2025 was the most student-friendly of the recent five years.
Does IPMAT repeat questions from previous years?
Rarely directly. The concepts repeat — coordinate geometry, data arrangement, confusing words — but the questions themselves are new each year. Focusing on topic trends (as above) is more productive than memorising old question answers.
