IPMAT Short Answer (SA) Section 2028 — How to Attempt, Score & Avoid Traps

Updated: Apr 10

What is the IPMAT Short Answer Section?

The Short Answer (SA) section is unique to IIM Indore's IPMAT — it does not exist in IPMAT Rohtak or JIPMAT. It consists of 15 questions where you type your numerical answer directly into a text box. There are no options to choose from. You must calculate the exact answer and enter it.

The SA section is worth 60 marks (15 questions × 4 marks each) and comes with zero negative marking. This makes it one of the most strategically important sections in the entire IPMAT — because every question you attempt is risk-free. Most aspirants underestimate or fear the SA section. Toppers treat it as a guaranteed scoring opportunity.

Tanisq Chouhan, our student who scored AIR 1 in JIPMAT, specifically prepared an SA-equivalent strategy during practice. “The SA section rewards students who actually understand concepts rather than those who guess from options. If you know how to solve a problem, you will get it right. There is no negative marking to fear,” he explains.

SA vs MCQ — Key Differences

What Topics Appear in IPMAT SA Section?

SA questions are drawn from the full QA syllabus — the same topics as MCQ questions. However, SA questions tend to be slightly more calculation-intensive since there are no options to back-calculate from. Based on previous year papers (2021–2027), here is the typical SA topic distribution:

The Golden Rule of SA: Attempt Every Question

With zero negative marking, there is never a reason to leave an SA question blank. Even if you are 60% confident in your answer, enter it. The worst outcome is 0 marks — not minus 1. This is fundamentally different from the MCQ strategy where skipping is often smarter than guessing.

In competitive years, the difference between a student who gets into IIM Indore and one who misses by a few marks often comes down to SA performance. Students who attempt all 15 SA questions and get 10 right score 40 marks on SA alone — enough to jump one rank band.

How to Approach SA Questions on Exam Day

Step 1 — Read the full SA section first (2 to 3 minutes): Before solving, scan all 15 SA questions. Identify which ones you can solve immediately and which require more time. Prioritise easy and medium questions first.

Step 2 — Attempt high-confidence questions first: Solve the 8 to 10 SA questions where you are highly confident. Write neatly, check your arithmetic, and enter the answer. Do not rush and make careless errors on questions you know how to solve.

Step 3 — Attempt remaining SA questions with partial work: For questions you are less sure about, set up the equation or diagram and attempt a solution. Even a partially worked answer can lead to the correct result. Enter whatever answer you reach.

Step 4 — Verify answers using substitution: For Algebra and Number System SA questions, always substitute your answer back into the original equation to verify. This takes 10 seconds and eliminates careless errors.

Common SA Traps to Avoid

Unit errors: TSD questions may give speed in km/hr and time in minutes. Forgetting to convert is the single most common SA error. Always check units before writing your final answer.

Rounding too early: SA answers are often exact fractions or specific integers. Rounding at an intermediate step gives a wrong final answer. Keep fractions as fractions until the final step.

Misreading the question: SA questions sometimes ask for a specific value (e.g., sum of digits, remainder, number of ways). Read the question twice to confirm exactly what is being asked before entering your answer.

Spending too long on one hard SA question: Set a 3-minute cap per SA question. If you cannot solve it in 3 minutes, enter your best estimate and move on. The time cost of one unsolvable SA question is too high.

How to Prepare for the SA Section

The most effective SA preparation method is removing answer options from your regular practice. When solving QA questions from RS Aggarwal or previous year papers, cover the options and solve to the final numerical answer before checking. This simulates SA conditions and builds the habit of working through to completion.

Frequently Asked Questions — IPMAT Short Answer Section

Is there negative marking in the IPMAT SA section?

No. SA questions carry +4 for correct and 0 for wrong or unattempted. Always attempt every SA question.

How many SA questions are in IPMAT Indore?

15 SA questions, each worth 4 marks, for a total of 60 SA marks out of 360 total marks in IPMAT Indore.

Does IPMAT Rohtak have SA questions?

No. The SA section is unique to IIM Indore. IPMAT Rohtak and JIPMAT are entirely MCQ-based.

Are SA questions harder than MCQ questions?

SA questions are slightly more calculation-intensive since you cannot back-calculate from options. Difficulty is Medium to Hard on average.

How much time should I spend on each SA question?

Target 2 to 3 minutes per SA question. If a question is taking longer than 3 minutes, enter your best estimate and move to the next.

What if I get a decimal answer in SA?

Enter the decimal or fraction as instructed on the exam interface. Some questions specify rounding to a certain decimal place — follow the instruction exactly.

Can I go back to SA questions if I finish early?

Yes. Within the QA section time window, you can navigate freely between MCQ and SA questions. Use any remaining time after MCQs to revisit SA questions.

How do I practice SA-style questions?

Cover the options when solving any QA practice question and calculate to the final answer before checking. This builds the SA mindset systematically.

What is the best strategy if I am weak in SA?

Focus on Arithmetic SA questions first — they are most predictable and solvable. Target 6 to 8 correct SA answers as a minimum and improve from there with practice.

Does the SA section affect IIM Indore shortlisting?

Yes. IIM Indore uses total IPMAT score for shortlisting, which includes SA marks. In competitive years, SA performance is often the differentiator between candidates with similar MCQ scores.

Are SA questions from the same syllabus as MCQ?

Yes. SA questions are drawn from the same QA syllabus: Arithmetic, Algebra, Number System, Geometry, and Modern Maths.

How many SA questions should I target getting correct?

Target 10 to 12 correct SA answers (40 to 48 marks). Top scorers often get 12 to 14 correct. Getting 8+ correct is a competitive minimum for IIM Indore admission.
